Maryland Hit and Run Lawyers

Hit and Run

The nerve of a driver that causes an accident and then flees the scene to avoid taking responsibility is difficult for most of us to fathom. Every driver knows that if he causes an accident, he is required by law to call the police and file an accident report, assist anyone who is injured, and exchange contact and insurance information with everyone involved. If a driver causes property damage of any kind and is unable to contact the owner, they must leave a note with contact information. The vast majority of us honor our responsibilities when we cause an accident. But when people are in an accident caused by an irresponsible driver who flees the scene, many seek out the assistance of an experienced Maryland hit and run accident lawyer such as Steven H. Heisler. Baltimore car accident attorneys like Mr. Heisler can explain the laws that apply and work hard to ensure that the injured party receives the justice and compensation they deserve.

Maryland Hit and Run Accident Laws

Maryland hit and run accident laws clearly define the responsibilities of the person who caused the accident. The laws state:

  2. The driver of each vehicle involved in an accident that results in bodily injury to or death of another person immediately shall return to and remain at the scene of the accident until the driver has complied with § 20-104 of this title.

§ 27-113. Violation of § 20-102 of this article.

  1. Penalty for serious bodily injury.- A person who violates § 20-102 of this article ("Driver to remain at scene - Accident resulting in bodily injury or death") and who knew or reasonably should have known that the accident might result in serious bodily injury to another person and serious bodily injury actually occurred to another person, is guilty of a felony and on conviction is subject to imprisonment for not more than 5 years or a fine of not more than $5,000 or both.
